Kofi Annan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations,

has donated $5,000 to The House of the Seven Gables

Kofi Annan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations, has agreed to donate $5,000 to the Gables 101: The Second Hundred Years annual fundraising event on September 18th  beginning at 4:30 p.m. We are honored to have his support, and see it as a testament to the important work that happens here at The Gables every day, both in developing programs for underserved immigrant youth and their families, and in finding new ways to interpret, strengthen, and preserve our unique historic legacies and site

Founded in 1910 by Salem philanthropist Caroline Emmerton, The Gables has a century-long history of providing Settlement programs originally aimed at assimilating Salem’s newly arriving Polish and Eastern European immigrants into American culture. Today we continue this valuable work with underserved immigrant youth and their families. The programming born of these partnerships include multidisciplinary and intergenerational musical performances, theatrical productions, English language support classes, college preparation, and job training.

The annual Caroline O. Emmerton Award for Community Service and Philanthropy will be awarded to Donald C. Seamans of Marblehead in recognition of his dedication and long years of service to The Gables. Three young women from Salem’s Dominican community will be receiving $500 scholarships to assist them with their educational goals. They are Shantel Alix, Janice Dominguez, and Scarlett Gonzalez.

This event will be held on the seaside lawn overlooking Salem Harbor and The Gables Colonial Revival Gardens. Henley Douglas, Jr. and his jazz group Soul Force V will provide old-style New Orleans Jazz musical entertainment. A live auction will be held featuring weekend getaways, art work, and special dinner packages.

If you have not yet registered for this wonderful event, or made a donation, please do so today by calling 978-744-0991, ext. 108. Tickets are $101.00. Or, you may make a donation by writing a check to The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association or by making an electronic donation at www.7gables.org.
