The first Life and Labor Weekend will take place with activities starting on Friday, May 5 for the opening night performances of I am Joan Sullivan: A Theatrical Experience. Visitors will be introduced to Joan Sullivan, the former Irish Catholic indentured servant of merchant John Turner, who built The House of the Seven Gables in 1668, and her new master, turbulent Quaker merchant Thomas Maule. This tumultuous story will take place in the Hooper-Hathaway House with snacks and a cash bar. Showtimes are Friday, May 5 and Saturday, May 6 at 6:00, 7:00, and 8:00 and Sunday, May 7 at 1:00, 2:00, and 3:00. The annual exhibit, Life and Labor Over Four Centuries at The House of the Seven Gables, will be open during regular operating hours and is free to visit. Explore the history of work through special objects from the collections and archives as well as an interactive music kiosk and historic documents.

Families are welcome to enjoy hands-on history in our signature Living History Labs programming. Living History Labs take place on May 6 and 7 from 10:30 – 1:00 and 2:00 – 4:30. Education staff will be teaching lessons about wool carding, seventeenth century food, nautical life, and settlement house activities. Finally, on Sunday, there will be a butter making demonstration from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Family activities are included with general admission to the site.
