Educational Programs: Preschool

spacer
spacer

Preschool programs differ greatly from young children's day care in specialized focus, structure, daily schedule, academic standards, and academically trained teachers. Preschools prepare children in social and academic curricula and for the transition to the scholastic environments of kindergarten and elementary school. Program hours support the transition times between a child's solitary pursuits and group activities so necessary to learning about self and others.

The goals of The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Preschool Program include the development of independence, intelligence, individuality, social skills, and emotional well-being. These goals are accomplished through many activities such as thinking games, arts and crafts, music (singing, listening, and dancing), movement and physical education, fieldtrips, mathematics, science, imaginative and group play, and parent participation.

Parent-teacher conferences and written student evaluations are scheduled twice during the school year. However, parents may request a conference with their child's teacher at a mutually agreeable time whenever they wish. Teachers notify parents of any significant developments or special problems as soon as they are observed.

All parents are invited to meet the teachers and the Director of Education and Community Services before the opening session in September. All written policy statements/handbooks are provided at the September parent orientation meeting. Parents of children new to The Program in September are required to attend the September parent meeting .

Applications for enrollment/ re-enrollment are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. The Preschool enrolls a total of 30 children per day, but, because not every child attends daily, the total enrollment may be higher than the daily one. Weekly fees are charged according to a sliding fee scale with payments due one week in advance of child care service.

Preschool sessions are held from 9:00 – 12:00 , Monday through Friday, following the Salem Public School calendar for no-school days. Breakfast is provided daily. A longer program day is also offered until 2:00 or 5:30 p.m. daily, with lunch and a mid-afternoon snack provided. The full day option is limited to10 students/day.

Please call the Director at 978-745-5909 to make an appointment for a tour of The Preschool and a explanation of the curriculum offerings.
