Hooper-Hathaway House and Seaside Garden

This photo of the Hooper-Hathaway House, taken by Caroline Emmerton, is the oldest one in our archives that shows the house at its current location only a year after its relocation to our museum campus in 1911. In the photo you can see Joseph Chandler’s colonial revival touches, such as the diamond-paned windows that are still on the home.
Note too the original garden layout. Chandler designed the gardens in the same colonial revival fashion that he had restored the houses. Though the garden was originally laid out to be more of an herb garden than an ornamental bed; the Jacobean knot pattern in the photograph is the same pattern used in our gardens today. The beds laid out by Chandler are now raised and adorned with rose trellises.
